Kira Seamon is a multifaceted artist known for her captivating blend of traditional and experimental photography, with a unique focus on kaleidoscope imagery. Born and raised in Hawaii, Kira has spent much of her life immersed in the world of visual and performing arts. As a former national and two-time regional dance champion, Kira's early career in dance led her to significant recognition in major publications like Dance Teacher and Dance Spirit. She was lauded for her innovative approach to movement, a creativity that seamlessly carried over into her visual art.
In addition to her achievements in dance, Kira is also a highly accomplished pianist, earning gold medals and state titles in piano performance in Hawaii. However, it was in photography where Kira truly found her artistic voice. Though she had always been passionate about photography, it wasn’t until 2005 that she began to pursue it seriously, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her artistic journey.
Kira’s work spans a variety of photographic styles, but she is perhaps best known for her kaleidoscope photography series, Stained Glass Sky. This original and innovative collection, featuring vibrant images of fall foliage through a kaleidoscopic lens, has garnered significant acclaim. Her colorful, whimsical approach to photography reflects her identity as a colorist, drawing attention to the interplay of light, color, and pattern in nature. The Stained Glass Sky series has been showcased in over 50 solo exhibitions in the Boston area and has graced the covers of more than 50 newspapers, with her most prominent feature being an arts cover story in The Patriot Ledger, the largest circulation evening paper in New England.
Kira’s work has been celebrated in regional juried shows, national art exhibitions, and through numerous accolades, including being a 14-time grant recipient from Boston-area towns. She was also appointed Artist-in-Residence for the town of Natick, MA, and has frequently appeared on Public Television in the Boston area, further cementing her presence in the arts community.
Kira's contributions to the arts have been recognized on a larger scale, with her receiving a personal letter from Massachusetts Senate President Karen Spilka, as well as a Certificate of Recognition from the Massachusetts State Legislature for her grant work in Framingham, MA.
Now residing in New London, Kira continues to draw inspiration from her natural surroundings. Whether taking peaceful walks through state parks or along the beach to soak up her daily dose of “vitamin sea," she remains committed to her artistic practice and community involvement. Whether through the kaleidoscope lens or her dance and piano roots, Kira Seamon’s work continues to inspire and engage, with an ever-present focus on the beauty and complexity of the world around her. At the very least, we are pleased to have her join our team at Thames River Gallery!
